    1. Open your photograph in Procreate and duplicate it three times.
    2. Set your Background color to black.
    3. With one of your photo layers selected, tap the Adjustments tool, then Curves.
    4. Tap Red and bring the right node all the way down. Tap Green and bring the right node all the down as well.
    5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 with the remaining layers so that you are isolating the Red and Green channels.

Set the blend mode of each channel layer to Screen. This will mimic the semi-transparency of authentic Risograph prints.

At this point you may want to add a paper texture as well. The Risograph Print Pack includes one, or you can choose a different paper texture that suits you.

Adding Texture

With all the channels separated into their own layers, we can now add the Risograph texture. There are a few different ways to achieve this. We'll be using the Print Pack full page textures.

Adding textures from the Risograph Print Pack to a photo of a parrot in Procreate.
  1. You can drop in a texture by tapping Actions>Insert a File and selecting the Riso texture you want to use. Alternatively, you can open your Files App or cloud device and drop the textures into Procreate.
  2. Adjust the size of the texture to fit your photo then apply it as a Clipping Mask above one of the channel layers.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until each layer has a texture above it.

There are multiple options for blend modes when applying the Risograph textures. In our experience Hard Light, Color Dodge, Overlay, and Add all yielded nice results. You're free to mix and match until you get an image that looks best to you.

Experiment with adjusting the color of each channel by tapping Adjustments>Hue, Saturation, Brightness. You can see we turned the Red channel bright pink to mimic the fluorescent pink ink color available in Risograph printers. You can also add a new layer set to Overlay above each channel (but below your Riso texture) and fill it with whatever color you like. Experiment and try out different techniques.
